The first dance is over. The floor was packed, everyone was on their feet.
Then, slowly, it empties. The DJ moves on to a track he likes, nobody follows, and the night tips over without anyone understanding why.
The only vendor who isn’t allowed to make a mistake
A photographer takes two thousand shots and delivers you two hundred. A videographer edits for weeks, cuts, starts over. Their work is beautiful, and they’re allowed to mess up a shot: it will simply never make the cut.
I don’t get a second take.
Every track is a gamble. I play it once, live, in front of the whole room. Whether you’re fifty, a hundred, or three hundred guests, they’re all looking the same way at the same moment.
If I get it wrong, the floor empties in ninety seconds.
And an empty floor doesn’t fill back up with a snap of the fingers. It takes twenty minutes to win it back. Sometimes you never win it back at all, and the night stays lukewarm to the end.
So I don’t just run through a playlist. I read the room, constantly. Who’s dancing, who’s sat back down, who’s checking their watch, who’s waiting for their song without daring to ask. And I adjust, track after track, all night long.
Twenty-two years in the business, seven of them in Canada
Over a thousand events.
I started like most people do: playing what I loved. House music, mostly. Then I left for Canada, and stayed seven years. That’s where I actually learned the trade. Not from books — from the rooms.
Playing something other than what I love. It’s less glamorous, and yet it’s the whole job. Your evening isn’t my playlist.
Knowing when to grab the mic. And knowing when not to. A wedding evening is already packed with speeches: the best man, the parents, the friends. A DJ who piles on more doesn’t lift the mood, he weighs it down. That’s where the real skill lies: sensing the moment an announcement wakes the room up, and the moment it puts it to sleep.

The hardest exercise in my line of work
A mixed wedding means two families, two musical cultures, one dance floor.
You have to hold both, all night, without either side of the room ever feeling like they’re waiting their turn. Sensing the exact moment to switch over, and the moment you absolutely shouldn’t.
It’s the hardest thing I know how to do. I did it often in Canada, and I still do it here.
And if you’re planning a traditional wedding, a corporate event, or a birthday, that’s exactly why yours will go smoothly. I’ve already done the hard version a hundred times. Yours, I know by heart.
Fifteen hours
I arrive at 2pm for a ceremony that starts at 4.
I leave at 5am, once the last cable is packed away.
Do the math.
And the teardown doesn’t start with the music cutting out abruptly at 3am. We pack down gently, still playing, while the last guests finish their drinks. Nobody should feel the end arrive like a curtain falling.
A DJ who does this alone, hauling three hundred kilos of gear in and back out, isn’t the same man at 2am that he was at 6pm.
That’s why a technician comes with me. While he watches the equipment, I watch the room. I see who’s bored, who’s too shy to get up, who’s been waiting an hour for their song without daring to ask.
That’s my real job. And it’s the main difference between a 900-euro service and mine.

The night is won months in advance
A lot of DJs ask you for a playlist by email. The night before.
Or worse: they asked for it six months ago, and never opened it.
As soon as you sign, I open a shared document for you. A music guide. The list of tracks you absolutely want. And the list of tracks you never want to hear, under any circumstances — which matters just as much.
Unless you lose a bet. In that case, I promise nothing.
We fill it in together, calmly, over several months. I read it. I reread it.
On the day, I coordinate with the wedding planner if there is one, the caterer, the photographer, the videographer, the venue, and any other vendor present that day. The timing of a wedding evening is my job too.
Two details that ruin entire weddings
The decibel limiter. A lot of venues have one. A DJ who doesn’t know how to work with it trips it: the sound cuts out, the floor empties, and it takes ten minutes to get everything going again. Ten minutes, at 1am, you don’t get back.
The ceremony with no power. A garden, a field, a path between the vines, not an outlet in sight. I show up with a battery-powered standalone speaker. And if the power trips during the evening, the music doesn’t stop dead: it keeps going, quieter, until it’s restored.

The caterer. The venue. The outfits.
And then the expenses you never saw coming, adding up week after week, one by one. A budget that swells and never comes back down.
At some point, you have to cut something.
And music becomes a tempting target. After all, the DJ is just going to hit play and run through a few songs.
I know. I got married too, and I had that exact budget in front of me.

And no checking the photos on your phone.

No, a wedding DJ doesn’t cost €1,000
Search “wedding DJ budget” on Google. You’ll see that number everywhere.
It’s wrong, and it’s setting you up for a bad surprise.
It matches a real service that does exist: a solo DJ who shows up at 8pm, plugs in two speakers on stands, plays some songs, and leaves at 2am. No technician. No proper lighting. No preparation. No coordination with the caterer.
It’s not a scam. It’s simply something different from what you think you’re buying when you read the article.
These figures have been copy-pasted from site to site for years, by people who have never set up a sound system in their life. And that’s what you’re building your budget on.
